The city
Why a car comes up in Montreal.
Car rental in Montreal is a bilingual city with a metro that covers more than visitors expect and a road network that still wins the moment you leave the plateau. People rent for Dorval arrivals, for Laval and the south shore, and for the Laurentian weekend.
The airport is Montreal-Trudeau, and the search often says Dorval. That arrival is on the airport page, not this one. French is part of the driving environment. This guide is in English and does not pretend to be the road-sign manual.
Vehicles
What people usually need here.
An SUV is the honest winter highway car. A minivan fits a family landing at Trudeau. A cargo van fits a move, not a night in the old city. Electric works better as a city week than as an unplanned Laurentian night.
Driving
The roads that decide the vehicle.
Bridges and the Metropolitan are the stress. Winter parking and a snowbank that ate a lane are the other stress. A low sports car is a poor February tool. A compact car is reasonable in the central boroughs if you truly stay there.
One-way ideas toward Ottawa or Quebec City should be named as such. See Quebec City and one-way.

Season
The year is not one trip.
Winter lasts, and it is the season that should choose the car. Summer festivals make downtown driving optional. Construction is a character in every season.
Luxury and cheap modifiers both exist. They do not get twin Montreal pages. Use luxury and cheap rental.
Beyond
Nearby, without pretending it is the same city.
Laval is the island north of Montreal, with its own bridges. Quebec City is the other historic drive.
